3. SCIENTISTS MULL IMPLICATIONS OF SALMON SEX CHANGE

Scientists have reason to believe that a contributing factor in the
decline of Northwest salmon is that many females could have male
chromosomes. Samples of fall chinook salmon taken in 1999 from the
Hanford Reach on the Columbia River found that 80 percent of the females
spawning probably began life as males.
