3. COLUMBIA DREDGING DRAWS ASTORIA OPPOSITION

An Army Corps of Engineers’ meeting Nov. 12 in Astoria drew heated opposition
to a proposal to deepen by three feet 115 miles of the lower Columbia River
and Willamette River shipping channel.

Lower Columbia River residents accused the Corps of proposing to take
actions designed to pump economic benefits into the Portland metro area
at the expense of people who live and work along the lower river.
